Hedgehog Friendly Wimborne

Everyone loves a hedgehog. Britains only spiny mammal is certainly ‘cute’ and with an appetite for snails, caterpillars and other plant munchers, it is a welcome garden visitor. Sadly numbers have plummeted and since 2020 they have been declared vulnerable to extinction across Britain. A loss of places to live, the use of pesticides, a decline in the abundance of insects and an increase in road traffic, have all contributed to their demise. Thankfully there are positive signs that, with a bit of help, our prickly friends can do well in towns. This where Hedgehog Friendly Wimborne comes in. We are a small group of volunteers who are working together to make our town and the surrounding area a great place for hedgehogs to thrive. Through talks, events, articles and blogs we raise awareness of hedgehogs needs and how we can help. We are also mapping hog sightings, including (sadly) roadkills, so that we can find out where our ‘hog hot-spots are. Small actions can make a big difference!
