Bumble Bees Need Our Help In This Hot Weather
Bumble bees are suffering in this prolonged heat, they are more adapted to cooler weather with their furry coats. You can help them by putting water for them in a shady spot, to prevent evaporation. They need to be able to land on a firm surface, then drink, so pebbles or marbles in the dish are important. A large older-type dinner plate works well, they can drink easily from the slope of the plate. Remember to re-fill the dish often in hot weather, the water soon evaporates!
They also need shade to rest from the heat. Try to establish shady retreats in your garden, e.g. piles of sticks or logs, clippings, general garden rubbish etc. Bumble bees will make tunnels in the earth to live in, so please leave patches of bare earth in shady spots too. They have less energy to forage for food in hot weather, so you could give them a treat and put some flowers near their home, if you are lucky enough to have some living near you. If you want to know which pot of flowers to choose, go to your garden centre and the local bumble bees will show you which ones they like best, from the display of bedding flowers!
These popular bees will thank you for helping them at this difficult time.
